Test to determine diabetes
Diabetes is confirmed by the following tests.
Fasting Blood Sugar
Fasting blood sugar is the first test done to check for diabetes and prediabetes. This test measures the blood glucose after you have fasted for at least 8 hours.
Random Blood Sugar
Blood glucose levels are tested randomly throughout the day. In normal people, the levels don’t change much. But in people with diabetes, the blood glucose levels vary much.
Oral Glucose Tolerance test
In this test, the person fasts overnight for about 8 hours. The person then receives an oral dose of glucose after fasting. The oral glucose tolerance test measures blood glucose levels five times over a period of three hours.
Symptoms of Diabetes
Increased hunger, increased thirst and increased urination are the common symptoms of this condition. Loss of high amounts of glucose in urine leads to dehydration. Weight loss occurs in few even though there is increase in appetite. Infections, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting and fatigue also occur in diabetic patients.
