Glaucoma Diagnosis And Treatment

Glaucoma DiagnosisGlaucoma is often related to the build up of pressure inside the eye. It is a disease that causes damage to the eye’s optic nerve. It can get worse over time. Glaucoma can also be inherited and may show up later in life. Glaucoma prevention is not possible. Hence glaucoma diagnosis becomes important that helps to curb the disease from getting worse.

Glaucoma Diagnosis

As part of glaucoma diagnosis, the doctor will first use eye drops to open your pupils. Next, he will check your vision and examine the eyes. The doctor will then check your optic nerve. In case you have glaucoma, this nerve will look in a certain way. The doctor might take photos of the nerve. This helps to keep track of your condition over time. In order to check the pressure in the eye, he will do a tonometry test. He may also do a visual field test if necessary. This is to figure out whether you have lost your peripheral vision or your side vision. These glaucoma tests are painless and doesn’t take much time.

Glaucoma Treatment

Your doctor may use the following methods for glaucoma treatment:

Eye Drops

The eye drops help to reduce the formation of fluid in your eyes or may increase its outflow. Allergies, stinging, blurred vision, redness and eye irritation are the side effects. Some glaucoma medications may also affect your lungs and heart. It is always best to inform your doctor about any other medications if you are taking them or you are allergic to.

Laser Surgery

In case of open angle glaucoma, laser surgery helps to increase the fluid flow from the eye. If you have angle closure glaucoma, this helps to stop fluid blockage. Below are the procedures:

  1. Trabeculoplasty helps to open the drainage area
  2. Cyclophotocoagulation helps to reduce fluid formation by treating the middle layer of your eye.
  3. Iridotomy lets the fluid flow more freely by making a tiny hole in the iris.

Microsurgery

The doctor performs trabeculectomy in which a new channel is created to drain off the fluid and to ease the eye pressure. In some cases this surgery may fail and has to be done again. In order to drain the fluid, your doctor may implant a tube. You may experience temporary or permanent loss of vision and also infection or bleeding.

The combination of eye drops, microsurgery and laser surgery helps to treat open angle glaucoma. Normally doctors in US use medicines first. But there is evidence that laser or microsurgery in early stages may also work better in some cases.

Congenital glaucoma means you are born with it. Surgery is the only means of treating it as the problem is a distorted drainage system. It’s always best to talk to your doctor so as to find out the best glaucoma treatment for you.
