Psoriasis Diet – What should I eat or Avoid?

But should you also follow any psoriasis diet i.e. be watchful on what’s on your plate? A healthy diet normally includes lots of veggies and fruits, whole grains and lean protein which is a good diet for everyone. Some people having psoriasis say their eating habits do affect their skin.

There is no scientific proof that avoiding certain foods or following any particular psoriasis diet will help your condition. However what you eat and drink can still make a difference.

Limiting Alcohol Intake

The relation between psoriasis and alcohol is not very clear. But experts suggest that drinking has to be moderate. Studies have shown that men who drink heavily do not show response to psoriasis treatments. Some research also suggests that the skin of the people who have psoriasis and drink heavily gets better as they stop drinking.

In case your condition is severe or you are taking any medication, then your doc may suggest to completely stay away from alcohol.

Include Foods That Are Anti-Inflammatory

Though research is limited some people with psoriasis say by eating anti inflammatory foods they are able to manage better. Antioxidants like vitamin E, vitamin C, selenium and beta carotene can bring about a difference as per some studies. Fatty acids from fish oil is also helpful according to a research. Still more research is required in this regard.

Generally speaking, anti-inflammatory foods are healthy. So giving it a try doesn’t hurt anyone. They include the following:

  1. Heart healthy fat sources like seeds, nuts and olive oil.
  2. Fruits, vegetables, berries, cherries and leafy greens.
  3. Spices and herbs which are antioxidants like cumin, ginger, sage and thyme.

  2. Red meat
  3. Refined sugars and processed foods

Weight Loss

Being obese or overweight increases your chances of getting psoriasis and the symptoms also tend to be severe. As per some studies, getting rid of extra pounds may make your skin better. The reason is fat cells produce certain proteins that can cause inflammation and make the condition even more worse.

Gluten Free Psoriasis Diet

Do you feel sticking to a gluten free diet can make your condition better? Even though you have heard success stories from people who have tried it, there is no proper evidence so far to confirm it. More research is required. If  you have celiac disease which is an autoimmune disorder like psoriasis, this kind of eating plan is useful. Research suggest that people are more likely to also have another autoimmune disorder along with psoriasis.

Sticking to a gluten free diet means you have to avoid foods which have grains like barley, wheat and rye. The flip side is these foods are heart healthy. And psoriasis increases your chances of getting heart disease. So before making any changes in the food you have or following any diet, talk to your doctor or your nutritionist first.
